AMKSS Secondary 1 Orientation Campfire 2016

AMKSS Secondary 1 Orientation Campfire 2016

The sun set over the premise of AMKSS while the spirit of excitement and expectation rose among the secondary one students on 14 January. The orientation campfire was about to begin.

Slowly and in cluster, the parents of the secondary one students strolled into the school as invited guests and was greeted by the enthusiastic parents of the Parents Support Group (PSG) selling drinks and light sticks. This is just one of the many projects that the PSG organize to raise funds for the school.

That evening, the new parents were invited to witness their children enjoying the campfire as well as getting to know one another.

At 7.30pm sharp, Mr Tom Chan, our principal, gave an introductory speech to the students and parents. Shortly after, he declared the start of the campfire by lighting the fire. Once the fire was ablaze, it was immediately followed by an army of roar and cheer from the students. The student leaders then led the students into a series of cheers like ‘sec ones are you okieee …’. The response, enthusiasm and cheers were spontaneous, lifting the evening into a high climax.

Soon after, the programs of the night began with various secondary one classes performing their dance and cheer items. These were mainly pop songs selected by the students and the dance steps choreographed by them. As a new parent myself, it was eye candy to watch the students grooved into various dance steps to the funky music. What was more interesting and motivating was that every parent saw how their child has grown into young lady and gentleman, enjoying themselves with their new found friends.

The evening took another climax when the student leaders led various groups into a cheer war. This was fun to watch as various groups ‘fought’ their way to win the fight.

When the ‘war’ was over, we realized that it was 2 hours later. How time flies. Next, the students were given their supper and they get to meet their parents and orientate them around the school premise. This was where the touching and heart-warming moments began where we saw students hugging their parents, some in tears, some in cheers and some were overwhelmed by the spirit of the night.

15 minute later, the students gathered back at the open ground where Mr Chan declared the campfire officially over as the fire dimmed into the darkness of the night. Reluctantly, the students bid farewell to their parents and proceeded to their classrooms to retire for the night. And we were sure there was more fun and laughter after lights out.

Next morning, the students woke up to the chirping of the birds and was greeted by a hearty breakfast. This was followed by a series of workshops to equip the students for a new phase of their student life. At noon, the orientation camp was finally over.

As the students departed and dragged their weary feet homebound, they were filled with gratitude and anticipation of what is to come for the next 4-5 years. From the bottom of our hearts, we know that every young lady and gentleman of AMKSS is now ready to face a new challenge in secondary school.  And surely, we know without a shadow of doubt that every AMKsian always strive for the best!

10 Simple Ways to Connect to Your Teen

Mrs Ismail who is in-charge of Environment Education would like to appeal to PSG parents' support on the following: This year the school will be embarking on re-using or recycling used glass bottles - wine ketchup, drinks, essence of chicken bottles etc and containers or jars to be used as decorative items. This is a student initiated project. Please help us in our effort towards waste minimisation either by donating the glass bottles and/or containers. We will get a vendor to help us with the terrarium making which will be placed in each class. Parents could either bring the bottles/containers on 28 Feb Lo Hei (Sec 1 esp) or drop them off at the boxes outside the school General office. Thank you very much. Looking forward to the support in this project.
