Fathers@AMKSS inaugural outing 5th March 2016 is the day fathers@AMKSS organized their inaugural outing – a guided walk and mangrove salvaging at Sunget Buloh Wetland Reserves. The event was led by Mendis Tan, Senior Manager of the Reserves for our 20 participants. It was a sunny day where we met Mendis at the Wetland Centre. Our team was divided into 2 team led by 2 nature volunteers. The teams 'toured' a section of the Reserves where the nature volunteers educated us about the various types of mangroves as well as the inhabitants of the Reserves. In fact, we encountered water monitor lizards, tortoises, various types of birds, giant spiders and a poisonous snake. During the 'tour', fathers and children were able to share their excitements on these new discoveries. After about an hour, we arrived at the mangrove swamp where we changed into our rubber boots. We then entered the mud holding hands as out boots got stuck in the mud and needed one another to get out. Our purpose for the day was to uproot these mangroves and transferred them into plastic bags. The Park Rangers would then transfer them to various designated sites and replant them to prevent soil erosion. During the laborious exercise, we could see fathers and children teamed up to ensure that the mangroves were carefully uprooted without being damaged. In the process of uprooting, we could hear screams from the children as they uprooted earthworms as well as the mangroves. At the end, we salvaged about 25 mangroves. It was a small number but brought big sense of achievements to our participants. Following that, we got out of the swamp, washed ourselves and strolled back to the Wetland Centre. We were welcomed by our sumptuousness nasi lemak lunch. The participants saviored evey bit of our meals and shared the adventures and achievements among ourselves and nature volunteers. Soon, it was time to go. We bid goodbye to Mendis and our nature volunteers and exited the Reserves leaving behind our salvaged mangroves but took with us unforgettable memories, enriched bonding among the fathers and children and look forward to the next bonding events. It was indeed the best inaugural outing that fathers@AMKSS could ever have for we know that every AMKsian always strive for the best.

10 Simple Ways to Connect to Your Teen

Mrs Ismail who is in-charge of Environment Education would like to appeal to PSG parents' support on the following: This year the school will be embarking on re-using or recycling used glass bottles - wine ketchup, drinks, essence of chicken bottles etc and containers or jars to be used as decorative items. This is a student initiated project. Please help us in our effort towards waste minimisation either by donating the glass bottles and/or containers. We will get a vendor to help us with the terrarium making which will be placed in each class. Parents could either bring the bottles/containers on 28 Feb Lo Hei (Sec 1 esp) or drop them off at the boxes outside the school General office. Thank you very much. Looking forward to the support in this project.
